ISO 50001
ISO 50001 is an international standard for energy management systems (EnMS), designed to help companies systematically improve their energy performance. The goal is to optimize energy use, lower costs, and reduce environmental impact.
ISO 50001 was first published in 2011 and revised in 2018. It follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and aligns with other management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The standard defines requirements for:
- developing an energy policy,
- setting energy goals and action plans,
- using data for better decision-making,
- measuring and monitoring energy efficiency,
- continuously improving energy performance.
Implementing an EnMS in accordance with ISO 50001 enables organizations to increase energy efficiency, reduce energy costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. ISO 50001 certification can also serve as evidence of regulatory compliance and offer a competitive advantage.
For manufacturing companies, ISO 50001 is especially relevant as it helps identify energy efficiency potential, comply with regulations, and improve the carbon footprint. The standard provides a structured framework to systematically track and optimize energy use and emissions.
